Encouragement for Week Three

In our reading this week we find the Book of Ruth.  It’s a beautiful account of loyalty and commitment in troubled times.  Naomi, an Israelite, and Ruth, a Moabite, become related through marriage. When Naomi’s sons die, she is left in a precarious spot as a widow without children to care for her.  Yet, her daughters-in-law love her deeply, and Ruth refuses to depart from her.  Ruth’s response is testimony to the kindness that Naomi had shown her, even when technically they were no longer related.  The story goes full circle as Boaz acts with integrity.  Ruth and Boaz are married, and Naomi dwells with them as the caregiver to their child.  Love triumphs over loss, overcomes differences, and brings people together.

Sometimes the people who seem least likely to be relatives are united by life circumstances.  We don’t always get to choose those nearest to us, they simply enter our lives.  The question is, how will we respond to the people whom God has entrusted to our care?  Are we open enough to others to welcome them into the family joyfully? Is there someone in our extended family who needs to know that they are loved and accepted?  The Book of Ruth can show us the way.
